The band continued to add, “We’re extremely excited about joining the Standby Records family and having the chance to show you all our new release Time Slips Away. We are immensely proud of this record and feel that it’s the most accurate representation of who the three of us are. Get ready.”

Parkersburg, West Virginia-based hard rock band Jesse Smith & The Holy Ghost will release its new self-titled album on July 8 via Standby Records. In anticipation, the band has teamed up with Revolver to premiere its new song and music video, “826.” Check it out below and let us know what you think in the comments!
Jesse Smith (also the founding member of metalcore band Zao) said, “Over the years I have struggled to find my place as a songwriter. I’m a fan of heavy music, but I’ve always been into all types of stuff. When I began writing these songs, I just wrote from the heart, with no preconceived notions of what they would turn out to be but it’s been an amazing experience creating music and art with so many dear friends.
“These songs are straight-up what I was looking to do. When I began, I wasn’t sure who I was, but now I know.”
For the video, he adds, “We’ve been toying with the idea of doing our own videos for a while. We got together at our buddy’s production studio @recordatamp and ran the song live. It feels good to be in control.”
Smith and his live band–drummer Brandon Joy, bassist Ralph Moyers, and guitarists Breyer White and Dakota Walker, will be on tour with He Is Legend this summer. See dates below.

Since he left Christian metalcore band Zao in 2004, Jesse Smith has started — and stopped — a few different projects. But Jesse Smith & The Holy Ghost, which he began as a solo project but has since evolved into full-fledged band, might just be the one with staying power.

“When I started, it was just me and a producer,” explains Smith. “I figured once I started playing live, the cast of musicians would be changing but present. Fortunately, I’ve found a great group of guys.

“I had recorded an EP and was at the point where I had to come up with a name for the project,” he continues. “‘The Holy Ghost’ was thrown out there. I was raised in a Pentecostal church, so those overtones of spirituality, whether positive or negative, are definitely reflected in the music. Sometimes music reminds me of church or a cult. The ritual aspect. Someone creates something. They find a group of people that believe in it and try to spread that idea to the masses.”

Smith hopes that people will come to believe in his version of the Holy Ghost, which is releasing its first full-length album, Self-Titled, on Standby Records on July 8. “My musical goals are to grow as a band and hopefully connect with some people. To continue to improve myself and the art I get to make, and to open doors to spending more time on the road,” he says. “I think as a band that’s where we shine. It’s where we want to be: meeting new people and turning them into fans. It’s important to us to stay present and find joy in whatever this band gets the opportunity to do.”

Listen to Jesse Smith & The Holy Ghost’s “The Mountain” the second single from Self-Titled, exclusively on Billboard below.

Smith says of “The Mountain,” “It’s about the climb to the top. The desire to reach one’s higher self. The goal of safety and the inevitable journey to the end. I envisioned a small group of people running from their adversary. Dropping off one by one, yet still believing they were headed to the only place that’s ‘safe,’ only to realize they have been surrounded. In the end, they’re left with nothing but surrender.”

“The Mountain” is a sample of the eclectic styles that inspire Smith. “I love Southern rock, stoner rock and classic rock,” he says. “Black Sabbath to the Rolling Stones.David Bowie, He Is Legend, Dynatron, Elektrik People and Foals. Big Black Delta, Wild Throne, Deftones. Influence, for me, comes from many styles that are not necessarily genre-specific. I get an idea for a riff or a melody and just go with it. There are so many amazing talents out there to take inspiration from.”

If you are a fan of the modern age of Heavy Metal then you certainly know Jesse Smith’s name. After making his name steering the wildly successful band Zao, he largely disappeared from the national scene, making only sporadic appearances under different monikers.

Thankfully, Smith returned a few years ago with Jesse Smith & the Holy Ghost and now it’s time to introduce it to the masses. Their self-titled record is released by Standby Records and we had to know more about what Smith has been up to, as well as his new record and future plans for this. Here’s what he had to tell us….

Interview by Mark Fisher

Hey Jesse! How are things going?

Good man! Staying busy. Hope you are well.

So, this album is a longtime coming. First off, how does it feel to finally put out your label debut?

It feels great. It has been a long time coming! I’ve been playing the how and when it’s going to come out game for a while now.

Jesse Smith & the Holy Ghost has a real “band” feel to it. Is this project intended to have a specific lineup or is it a more of a flexible thing?

When I started writing music again it was a solo effort, but in the last year we’ve solidified the band.

I found Standby Records to be an interesting choice to release it. They put out some great stuff, but they wouldn’t have been on my shortlist of guesses as to who would release it. What made them the right people to help you sort of “relaunch” yourself into the mainstream?

I’ve tried to do everything from the ground up. Build it right and be accountable, grateful, and present with it. It was a situation where I had to start over. I hadn’t played music in a long time. I had financed the whole thing and was just looking for a fair arrangement from someone to partner with.

I had worked out my own imprint on another label and when it came down to it I didn’t have the time and was running out of money.

I was introduced to Neil Sheehan and the guys at Standby by our management. It was a good fit for what we were both looking to do. Moving forward we are excited and they have been great!

I love how eclectic this album is and I’m curious how purposeful that was. Since you are obviously influenced by all sorts of music, were there certain things you wanted to try out, or try to incorporate, into the new music or is this just what sort of flowed out of you when writing?

Thank you. I’m glad you’re into it. Some of the songs were cut from different sessions over some time.

As your moving along your always writing, changing, while different things are coming to the table. Songs start feeling old to you even though no one has heard anything. I think it finally came to that spot of here is a good group of songs that represents the beginning phase of what we are doing. We have a lot of new songs getting kicked around. Can’t wait to get back in the studio!

“Killing Me Someone” is one of my favorite songs on the record. Would you mind telling our readers a little about that song and what inspired it?

That song is about a relationship. I played the duality card via “god and the devil.”  I was feeling like my voice in the situation, at that time, was falling on deaf ears.

“Light Blind” is another of the highlights in my opinion. Would you mind talking a bit about how that song came to be as well?

Nice. I’m surprised you picked these two songs to talk about.

“Light Blind” is another one about a relationship. The idea of “Sin” which by definition is just missing the mark as well as the idea we are born “evil” and our exoteric need for a fix.

The fix starts inside.

You have done a lot of different things since you first came on the scene with Zao. Is there a song or two on the album that you feel perfectly captures who you are musically today? Maybe a song that you can listen to and say, “That’s Jesse Smith in 2016!”

“Center of the Universe”. That’s where it seems to be heading. We will probably always stick to the simpler song structures and stuff. That was one of the newest cuts that made the release.

When people hear this album what do you hope they take from it?

I hope they can enjoy it! It’s taken a long time to pull it all together. I’m thankful to get the opportunity to share music I’ve worked on. If anything maybe people can gain a sense of hope. My life has been chaotic. Mostly because of choices I have made. I’ve been able to come out on the other side with a sense of gratitude. I’m happy to be here.

We live in a world that is full of so many distractions. A world of order givers and order followers. I would challenge people to think for themselves, and know they have value whatever the circumstance, or who or what they are being told they are.

Since a lot of your musical history is tied to Christian ideals, do you feel that is a part of you still today or is that in the rearview mirror at this point?

Depends on what day of the week. Ha-ha. Love is the key man. Love, knowledge, and truth. What I believe doesn’t really matter. I know we are on a giant rock, coasting thru space and this reality, dimension, plane, or whatever you want to call it, it is fleeting.

I’m only responsible and accountable to myself to stay awakened. That’s when change happens.

Will Jesse Smith & the Holy Ghost be touring behind this album? If so, what can we expect in the not-so-distant future?

Yes! We will be on the road a good bit over the next few months. You can catch us on the road next month with He Is Legend.

As I write this, West Virginia has experienced some terrible flooding. Was Parkersburg affected by any of this? I hope that you and yours are unaffected by it all.

Parkersburg wasn’t hit that bad at all. But the South of the state has been ripped apart. Massive flooding, casualties, countless people displaced from losing their homes. It’s awful.

Thanks so much for your time. I absolutely love this album and wish you a lot of success with it! Do you have any parting thoughts you’d like to leave our reader’s with?

Thank you so much for taking the time to do the interview. Thank you for giving it a listen. I’m stoked you’re into it. Thanks again.

Joining the label’s roster with new albums to be released over the next several months are: British alt rockers SECRET COMPANY, JESSE SMITH & THE HOLY GHOST, featuring Jesse Smith, a founding member of seminal metal-core band Zao (who are launching a tour with He Is Legend in support of their debut LP this summer), Dallas, TX rock trio PSEUDO FUTURE, San Jose, CA indie/alt 5-piece DEMON IN ME and Canton, OH alternative/electronic 4-piece I FIGHT FAIL.

Smith says, ” I’ve thrown the good work at this project. After writing, recording, and self-financing, it’s good to find a label home. We are excited to work with Neil Sheehan and the staff of Standby Records for a push on our first proper release.”

A music video for Jesse Smith & The Holy Ghost’s first single (“826”) off the album is premiering today on Revolver Magazine.

Breakout acts OUTLINE IN COLOR  and  LIGHT THE FIRE remain on the roster.

Label founder and CEO Neil Sheehan says, “Everything evolves. Standby has been a voice for the glam rock, goth rock and metal scene for over 8 years; but as in life, everything evolves and we excited to bring a new look and sound to the new era of Standby Records. Hailing from the small town of Parkersburg, West Virginia, Jesse Smith of Jesse Smith & The Holy Ghost has lived the all too familiar “ups” and “downs” of the music business for the last 20 years. As a founding member of the seminal Christian metal-core band Zao, Jesse went on to sell thousands of records, tour the world with some of the biggest names in metal, and influence the sound of countless major heavy acts.

“Over the years I have struggled to find my place as a songwriter,” explains Jesse. “I’m a fan of heavy music, but I’ve always been into all types of stuff. When I began writing these songs, I just wrote from the heart, with no preconceived notions of what they would turn out to be but it’s been an amazing experience creating music and art with so many dear friends,” Smith says. “These songs are straight-up what I was looking to do. When I began, I wasn’t sure who I was, but now I know.

Smith and his live band – drummer Brandon Joy, bassist Ralph Moyers, and guitarists Breyer White and Dakota Walker, also had the opportunity to hone their chops and test new post-classic alt rock material live as they took to the stage at renowned festivals like Milwaukee’s Summerfest, Delaware’s Dewey Beach Music Festival and Cornerstone Festival, as well as headlining and support gigs throughout the East Coast and Midwest backing artists like He Is Legend, Sleepwave, Filter, Saving Abel, Trapt, and more. The band’s first EP sold well over 1000 copies quickly in 2013 which truly spoke to Jesse that he was on the right path so over the next few years, he painted the portrait of his life in his music as he developed as an artist and a person.

The group tracked the new album at Michael Seifert’s Ante Up Audio (Dave Matthews Band, Fountains of Wayne) with Brandon Zano producing and engineering. With a release date set and tours running through the end of 2016, the future is bright.

SECRET COMPANY- “MIDNIGHT RUSH” SINGLE

secret company midnight rush single art

Secret Company are a band who have their eyes firmly set on the big time. They caught people’s attention last year when the lead track from their debut EP ‘Saviour’ – clocked over 160,000 streams on Soundcloud. Since then they have continued to impress. Follow up single ‘Picture’ attracted widespread critical acclaim and resulted in the band being invited to perform three live tracks on the prime time TV show Made In Chelsea. Building from that exposure they’ve topped the Shazam charts, stormed the Roundhouse in London with Coasts and enjoyed a series of their own sold out headline shows.

Lead singer & guitarist, Scott Revell describes this new track; “Midnight Rush started with a sort of Roy Orbison ‘I Drove All Night’ incentive, but quickly into writing it I kind of got taken down a darker route which felt more exciting and just kept going with it. It became real easy early on to imagine a visual for it too, which was like a dark Sin City/Robert Rodriguez kinda vibe. An influence from the film Drive was hard to avoid too. The track takes on quite a journey so it always feels like you’re headed somewhere, which makes playing it live really intense. The song sets the scene of being late at night, when you’re most vulnerable to letting feelings overtake you and then maybe doing something that you shouldn’t.”
